During Ear wax removal gentle techniques are used to remove built up ear wax from the ear canal.
Depending on the depth and type of the earwax there are different techniques which can be used. For superficial wax (wax close to the ear opening), micro suction can be used to remove the wax. Micro suction is a quick and painless procedure where a small device is used to suck the ear wax out of your ear.
For wax which goes deeper into the ear canal water irrigation can be used. A pro-pulse machine which has an electric pump is used to push water into your ear and wash the ear wax out. This is also a quick and painless procedure.
Our ear canals are self-cleaning. As we move our jaw to either eat or talk, skin cells and wax start to move slowly away from the ear drum and towards the outer ear, in most cases it then naturally falls out.
Ear wax is produced by glands inside the ear, the purpose of this waxy material is to protect our ears by trapping dirt and repelling water. It keeps the skin in our ear canal healthy, preventing it from drying and cracking and helps to prevent infections.
Some people can have more ear wax than others which is normal. You could have excess ear wax build up due to a number of reasons which include hairy or narrow ear canals, as you get older the wax becomes harder and become more difficult to naturally fall out. Other reasons include wearing ear plugs, headphones, pods, and any other devices which could potentially push wax back in the opposite direction. When you have blockages in the ear it can cause several symptoms such as difficulty hearing, earache, itchy ears, ear infections, dizziness, and tinnitus.
You can’t prevent ear wax as it is a normal bodily secretion which is needed to protect you by preventing dust, dirt, and foreign bodies from entering the ear and causing damage to your ear drum.
At the Haus of wellness, we can check your ears and remove any wax if required. Should a referral to your GP be required for further investigations this can be done for you once ear wax build up has been ruled out.
Before your appointment, use olive oil drops or spray for up to 3 days (no longer). Please only use olive oil and no other ear drops which contain any chemicals, as you don’t want to cause any damage to your delicate ear canals and drums.
Instructions on how to administer the drops or spray are very simple. Before bed use 1 to 2 drops in the affected ear, lay down for around 10 minutes and if possible, use some gentle massage behind the ear under your ear lobes. Have some tissue ready for when you sit up to stop for any oil leakage. Repeat in the other ear if required.
